Wild Zoo Visitors

Wild heron at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo (Photo by Jordan Schaul)

Last month Contributing Editor Jordan Schaul reported on the wading birds that nest at a rookery at the St. Augustine Alligator farm in St. Augustine, Florida.   Herons and egrets and other avian species  find sanctuary at the farm.

The birds nest above the captive crocodilians–native and exotic–that control predators of the wading birds’eggs.

Likewise, flighted guests find refuge on the grounds of zoological parks elsewhere. Here at Seattles’ Woodland Park Zoo a heron waits for an available fish while perched above a spheniscid penguin exhibit in late July.
